Day 16

We spent the lovely day in Cambridge today - totally awesome, it was! We had a city tour where we learned a lot of neat history about the school and town. Some things I learned were that Isaac Newton and Crick and Watson, who supposedly discovered the DNA structure, attended Cambridge - just to name a few famous people. There are actually 31 different colleges in Cambridge, which are spread all over the city. The University's earliest records date back to 1209...so this is a super old place packed with tons of interesting history.

The Senate Hall where diplomas are handed to students and final grades are posted outside on little poster boards- for everyone to see!

Dozens of shops filled the streets, as well as a market in an open square. The market has been around in that square for 800 years - crazy, huh?

The delicious smell of fresh fruit filled the air - yumm!

Also very interesting- a descendant of the tree that Isaac Newton sat under when the apple fell on his head is found on one of the college's grounds:

Thankfully when it rained this afternoon it was light and quick, so our punting rides were not disturbed. Our handsome tour guides were hilarious! And the scenery was beautiful.

The bridge behind us was designed by Sir Newton. Originally it had no bolts or screws, but students took it apart to try to figure out the design and couldn't put it back together without the help of them.
